Indie Rock and Roll For Me
Someone asked me today what my ideal company to work for would be. There’s a couple companies, but I also remembered this post about working as an indie developer that has been making the rounds. Basically, it’s about how to get to a point where developing software independently can make you enough money to survive.
The keyword I don’t like is “survive.” Making software is fun, but if it’s only paying the bills and not much more, then I don’t see it as a great way of life. A “regular” job has benefits besides being paid. Job security is the major one I can think of. Health insurance, life insurance, and just the peace of mind that comes with knowing your paycheck this month is not going to be based on whether enough people click “buy” on your website.
That’s not to say working independently is impossible. If you’re software is going to be truly epic, and sell enough to make you well-off, that’s gravy. I just don’t think having “survival” as your goal is wise.
